CES 2026: Lego Debuts Smart Brick And Interactive Star Wars Sets

Lego is entering a new era with the Lego debut of its first-ever smart brick. The company unveiled this innovation at CES 2026 in Las Vegas. Lego calls the smart brick its most significant advancement in decades.

At first glance, the smart brick looks like a standard Lego piece. It even retains the familiar click when connected. However, the interior contains advanced electronics that detect nearby smart bricks and minifigures. These sensors trigger sound and light responses instantly. A built-in accelerometer allows the brick to sense movement, reacting when tilted, shaken, or repositioned.

This innovation enables more complex play. Bricks can now produce audio cues, lighting effects, and small gestures during play. Lego engineers removed traditional wiring, using inductive charging coils similar to those in smartphones. These coils allow the bricks to sense each other and work within a new positioning system. Powered by two AAA batteries and connecting via Bluetooth, the smart bricks form a responsive, interactive network.

Lego describes its โ€œSmart Play Systemโ€ as its most groundbreaking innovation since the minifigureโ€™s debut in 1978. The system will launch in March 2026 and will include a color recognition scanner and a sound synthesizer. Wireless charging pads will also be available for easy recharging.

The first products in this line feature interactive Star Wars characters. These include Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, and Princess Leia. Each character has a unique personality that adapts to its surroundings, enhancing storytelling and play.

Chief Product Officer Julia Goldin explained that the smart bricks create โ€œnew dimensions of responsiveness, social play, and storytelling.โ€ The technology aims to offer a hands-on, screen-free experience. It encourages physical interaction and imaginative play in ways previously not possible.

With this Lego debut, the company is redefining interactive play. Fans and collectors can look forward to a new era where traditional building meets advanced technology. Legoโ€™s smart brick system represents a bold step toward the future of creative and responsive play.

This Lego debut marks a significant milestone, combining classic building fun with modern technology for an immersive experience.
