Malaysia Cracks Down on Telegram Over Harmful Content

Telegram

Malaysia has secured a court order against Telegram and two of its channels for allegedly spreading illegal and harmful content.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said Telegram failed to act on repeated reports, prompting legal action. The two flagged channels, “Edisi Siasat” and “Edisi Khas,” were accused of sharing content that could erode public trust and disrupt social harmony.

A high court issued an interim injunction to halt the content’s circulation and block its re-publication. Telegram has not yet responded, but authorities say it will be given a fair chance to defend itself.

This move follows Malaysia’s new social media law introduced in January, targeting platforms with over 8 million local users.
