ISLAMABAD: Meta Platforms has launched its first consumer-ready smart glasses featuring a built-in display, aiming to expand the success of its Ray-Ban line. The new device, called the Meta Ray-Ban Display, was introduced by CEO Mark Zuckerberg at the companyβs Connect event in California.
The latest smart glasses include a small digital display inside the right lens. This display shows basic tasks such as notifications, texts, and calls. Priced at $799, the device will be available in stores from September 30. Each pair also comes with a wristband controller that converts hand gestures into simple commands.
Zuckerberg described the glasses as an ideal way to access artificial intelligence while staying present in the real world. βGlasses are the perfect form factor for superintelligence,β he said, adding that they can enhance memory, communication, and senses.
The launch comes as Meta seeks to catch up with rivals like OpenAI and Google in the AI space. While Meta has already enjoyed strong sales with earlier Ray-Ban products, analysts say the new Display glasses may not achieve huge sales right away. However, they believe this launch is an important step toward Metaβs more advanced Orion glasses, expected in 2027.
Alongside the new model, Meta also introduced Oakley Vanguard glasses designed for athletes. Priced at $499, they connect with fitness apps like Garmin and Strava to deliver live workout stats and summaries. Meta further upgraded its older Ray-Ban series, now offering a better camera and longer battery life, priced at $379.
Industry experts note that smart glasses remain a niche product, but interest is growing. IDC forecasts that global shipments of AR/VR headsets and smart glasses will rise by nearly 40 percent in 2025. Meta is expected to play a major role in driving this growth.
