City Air Is Filled with Microplastics—People Are Breathing Them In

Levels of airborne microplastics in Xi’an have tripled since the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a new study.

Researchers at Xi’an Jiaotong University analyzed PM2.5 samples collected before and after 2020. These fine particles can deeply enter the lungs.

Before 2020, air filters showed various colored plastics from sources like tires, clothing, and industrial materials. After 2020, a major change occurred.

Transparent and white polypropylene fibers became dominant, matching the material used in disposable face masks. Scientists say discarded masks are now a major source of airborne microplastics.

Masks broken down by sunlight, ozone, and wear release these tiny fibers into urban air. This adds to existing plastic pollution in the environment.

Health risks are concerning. Particle modeling showed that some fibers settle in the nose and throat, but many reach deep lung areas. Teenagers and children are particularly vulnerable.

Inhaled microplastics may cause inflammation and carry toxic chemicals or microbes. Researchers are still studying the direct link to specific health outcomes.

Waste management gaps worsen the problem. One in three health facilities globally lacks proper protocols, letting lightweight plastics escape from landfills. Wind and traffic then turn litter into fine dust.

The study highlights how pandemic hygiene practices, like mask use, have changed urban air quality in Xi’an. Researchers recommend stricter waste disposal, better street cleaning, and improved testing to separate harmless fibers from harmful ones.

This research underscores the need to understand and manage airborne microplastics, as they now pose a growing risk to human health.
