Microsoft is developing a new OneDrive app for Windows 11 that will focus on media viewing, editing, and improved file management. The upcoming version appears to be a standalone application, designed to enhance user experience through a modern and intuitive interface.
According to Windows Central, the new OneDrive app exists as a separate executable named βOneDrive.app.exe.β When launched, it adds an icon to the taskbar and opens a dedicated window showing the userβs OneDrive photo library. The app uses a web-based structure with a refreshed design language featuring rounded menus and smoother navigation.
The new app introduces two main viewing modes: the traditional file management layout and a newly designed gallery mode. The gallery mode allows users to browse, organize, and edit photos seamlessly. It includes five tabs β Moments, Gallery, Albums, People, and Favorites β for quick access to different media categories.
A key highlight of the OneDrive app is the integration of Microsoftβs Copilot tool. When users hover over a file, Copilot appears and allows them to ask questions about the file or even request summaries without opening it. This AI integration enhances productivity and helps streamline file handling.
The Moments tab will bring back memories by showing photos taken on the same date in past years, similar to the mobile version of the app. Meanwhile, the Gallery tab offers quick photo editing tools that resemble those in the Windows Photos app.
Microsoft has not yet officially announced the release of this dedicated OneDrive app, and it remains unclear if it will replace the existing OneDrive integration within Windows 11βs File Explorer and Photos app. The company is expected to share more details during its Copilot and OneDrive showcase on October 8.
