Midjourney Expands Into Video Animation Amid Rising Legal Pressure

AI art platform Midjourney has rolled out its first public video generation feature, allowing users to animate still images into clips lasting up to 21 seconds. The new feature, which is currently available to paying subscribers, enables users to add motion to both subjects and camera angles through preset or manual controls.

The update comes as Midjourney seeks to broaden its creative tools and challenge AI video leaders like OpenAI, Google, and Meta. Users can animate either generated or uploaded images, and the video length can be extended in four-second intervals. However, video generation is more resource-intensive than image creation, with each second of video costing the equivalent of one image.

Despite the excitement around the launch, Midjourney is facing legal scrutiny. Entertainment giants Disney and Universal have filed lawsuits accusing the company of training its models on copyrighted material without consent. They specifically cited the new video feature, calling it a “virtual vending machine” for unlicensed content.

Early user feedback has been largely enthusiastic, with many creatives calling the feature a major advancement in AI-powered storytelling and animation. The company has not yet commented on the legal proceedings.
