OpenAI shared the revelations in a blog post and legal filing amid ongoing litigation with Musk, who has filed lawsuits opposing the company’s transition to a for-profit model.

The filing accuses Musk of attempting to undermine OpenAI’s growth while building his rival venture, xAI. OpenAI claims Musk supported the for-profit shift in 2017 but distanced himself when he couldn’t secure majority equity. Now, with his competing AI company, OpenAI alleges Musk is using legal tactics to stifle their progress.
In response, OpenAI stated: “We respect Elon’s early contributions, but the future of AI should be determined in the marketplace, not the courtroom.”
