NASA loses contact with its MAVEN spacecraft after it went silent on December 6 following a routine orbit around Mars. The orbiter, crucial for studying the Martian atmosphere since 2014, failed to communicate with NASAโs Deep Space Network after emerging from a scheduled communications blackout.
Pre-blackout data indicated all systems were functioning normally. However, limited tracking data later showed that MAVEN had entered an unexpected spin, suggesting its orbit may have been physically altered. Mission teams are working around the clock to analyze the data and restore control.
Because MAVEN also serves as a communications relay for surface missions, NASA has temporarily rerouted data transmissions for the Perseverance and Curiosity rovers. Communications are now passing through the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and the European Space Agencyโs Trace Gas Orbiter to ensure operations continue uninterrupted.
Despite NASA losing contact with MAVEN, surface operations remain strong. The Perseverance rover, approaching its fifth anniversary in February 2026, continues to explore Mars successfully. The rover has traveled approximately 40 km and is moving toward โLac de Charmesโ to collect new samples.
NASAโs Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has updated Perseveranceโs projected life span, estimating operations could continue until at least 2031. Tests on duplicate components on Earth confirmed that the roverโs actuators can handle at least another 60 km of driving.
Steve Lee, Perseveranceโs deputy project manager, said, โThese tests show the rover is in excellent shape. All systems are fully capable of supporting a very long-term mission.โ The rover relies heavily on its โEnhanced Autonomous Navigationโ (ENav) system, which allows it to avoid hazards in real-time.
Recently, Perseverance explored the โMargin Unit,โ a geologic area rich in olivine and carbonate minerals. Scientists believe these rocks formed from cooled magma and exposure to water, offering clues about ancient microbial life on Mars.
While NASA loses contact with MAVEN, surface exploration continues safely, demonstrating the resilience of Mars missions and the strength of autonomous systems like Perseveranceโs ENav.
