Google has unveiled a major update to its translation service with the New Google Translate. The update introduces real-time translation through headphones, enhancing multilingual communication.
The New Google Translate now allows users to hear live translations while preserving each speaker’s tone, emphasis, and cadence. This improvement makes it easier to follow conversations and identify who is speaking. Essentially, any pair of headphones can now function as a one-way real-time translation device.
“Whether you’re trying to converse in a different language, listen to a speech abroad, or enjoy a foreign TV show, you can put on your headphones and hear a real-time translation,” said Rose Yao, VP of Product Management for Search Verticals.
Currently, the beta feature is rolling out in the Translate app on Android devices in the U.S., Mexico, and India.
It supports over 70 languages and works with any headphones. Google plans to expand the feature to iOS and more countries in 2026.
The New Google Translate also integrates advanced Gemini features. These features provide smarter, more natural, and highly accurate text translations. Complex phrases, slang, idioms, and local expressions will now translate more precisely. For example, English idioms like “stealing my thunder” will be understood contextually rather than literally.
The update is available for translation between English and nearly 20 languages. Supported languages include Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and German. Users can access the features via Android, iOS, and the web.
Google is also expanding language learning tools to 20 new countries, including Germany, India, Sweden, and Taiwan.
English speakers can practice German, while speakers of Bengali, Mandarin, Dutch, Hindi, Italian, Romanian, and Swedish can now practice English. The platform provides improved feedback and learning tips for speaking practice.
Additionally, a streak tracker feature helps users monitor consecutive days of practice. This encourages consistent learning, similar to the popular Duolingo app experience.
With the New Google Translate, Google combines real-time translation and advanced learning tools. The update aims to make multilingual communication and language learning smoother and more accurate for users worldwide.
