OpenAI has launched a new tool called “deep research,” aimed at professionals in fields like finance, science, policy, and engineering. Unlike the usual brief answers from ChatGPT, this tool is designed for in-depth research and analysis, allowing users to process multiple sources and handle attachments like files and spreadsheets.
The deep research tool is available to ChatGPT Pro users and can generate responses in 5 to 30 minutes, depending on the complexity of the query. Currently, users are limited to 100 queries per month, but OpenAI plans to expand access to more users, including Plus and Team users, in the coming months. Enterprise users will get broader access soon.

For now, the tool provides text-only responses, with plans for future enhancements such as data visualizations, embedded images, and expanded data sources, including subscription-based services and internal company resources. It uses OpenAI’s o3 AI model, optimized for web browsing and data analysis.
Though the tool shows promising results, OpenAI warns that it is still prone to occasional errors, particularly in distinguishing reliable sources. Responses from deep research are fully documented with citations and reasoning summaries, helping users verify the information. In tests, deep research outperformed other AI models, but OpenAI cautions users to verify any findings as errors may still occur.
