Scientists Say Earth’s Ozone Layer Could Fully Heal Within 40 Years

Scientists have announced that the Earth’s ozone layer is recovering faster than expected and could be completely healed by 2066. The positive update comes from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in its latest Ozone Bulletin, released on the 40th anniversary of the Vienna Convention.

According to the report, ozone loss over Antarctica has declined significantly in recent years. This trend continues the steady recovery observed since the late 20th century. While natural atmospheric variations have had some influence, experts attribute most of the improvement to the global ban on ozone-depleting chemicals, particularly chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).

The ozone layer serves as Earth’s protective shield, blocking harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Without it, people and ecosystems would face higher risks of skin cancer, cataracts, and immune system damage. It also helps maintain environmental balance by protecting crops and marine life.

A major turning point came with the Montreal Protocol of 1987, signed by nearly 200 countries. The agreement aimed to phase out CFCs, once widely used in products like aerosols, refrigerators, and fire extinguishers. Thanks to this international effort, scientists now predict that ozone levels could return to 1980 conditions by 2040 in most regions, and by 2066 over the Antarctic.

“This is no coincidence,” said WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo, praising decades of global cooperation, open data sharing, and consistent atmospheric monitoring for the progress.

Experts also highlight that restoring the ozone layer supports wider global goals, including public health, climate action, and biodiversity protection. However, they caution that continued vigilance is necessary.

“There remains an essential need for the world to keep monitoring and enforcing environmental protections,” said Matt Tully, Chair of the WMO’s Scientific Advisory Group on Ozone and Solar UV Radiation.

The ongoing recovery of the ozone layer stands as one of humanity’s greatest environmental success stories—proof that global cooperation can heal the planet.
