Pakistan Unveils Its First AI-Powered Driverless Car At NED University

NED University of Engineering and Technology has successfully tested Pakistan’s first AI-powered driverless car, marking a milestone in the country’s tech sector. The autonomous vehicle was developed under the National Center for Artificial Intelligence (NCAI) and recently completed successful road trials on campus.

The AI-powered car operates without a human driver, navigating smoothly through campus roads. The prototype, built on an electric car imported from China, was transformed into a fully autonomous system using advanced robotics, LIDAR sensors, mapping technology, and computer vision algorithms.

After nearly a year of research and development, the project has entered its practical testing phase. The car’s steering system uses radar technology and AI-powered navigation tools to safely maneuver around obstacles. For safety, the vehicle’s speed is currently limited to 15–20 kilometers per hour.

NED researchers emphasized that the AI-powered car is designed to handle Pakistan’s challenging urban traffic. Its advanced sensors allow it to navigate potholes, uneven road surfaces, and local traffic conditions effectively.

The project team is now focusing on improving key features, including object detection, lane recognition, speed control, and traffic signal identification. These enhancements aim to make the car safer and more adaptable to real-world conditions.

The successful testing of this AI-powered driverless car reflects Pakistan’s growing capabilities in autonomous vehicle technology. University officials hope the project will inspire further innovation in AI applications across transportation and robotics in the country.

Students and faculty have shown significant interest in the project, and the university plans to continue refining the vehicle’s performance while exploring potential collaborations for broader deployment.

This development positions NED University and Pakistan at the forefront of AI-powered vehicle research in the region, signaling a promising future for autonomous technology.
