PTA Confirms Ongoing Discussions for Starlink's Registration in Pakistan

The Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Major Gen (retd) Hafeezur Rehman, confirmed on Tuesday that discussions are underway regarding the registration of satellite-based internet provider Starlink in Pakistan.

According to a PTA spokesperson, representatives from Starlink, a company owned by Elon Musk, met with Rehman during the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2025 in Barcelona. The discussion primarily focused on enhancing digital connectivity in Pakistan, formulating regulatory policies, and expanding broadband access to remote regions.

Rehman highlighted the significance of modern technology in strengthening national connectivity. He emphasized that acquiring a license requires prior registration with the relevant satellite regulatory authority.

In January, reports indicated that the federal government intended to hire a consultant to establish regulations for Starlink’s satellite internet services in Pakistan. This matter was discussed in a meeting chaired by Minister of State for Information Technology and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, with the objective of advancing satellite-based connectivity and technological growth.

The session was attended by representatives from SUPARCO, PTA, and the Pakistan Space Activities Regulatory Board. Discussions revolved around the licensing process for Starlink, regulatory developments, and the formulation of a framework for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites.

It was decided that a consultant would be engaged to facilitate the licensing process for Starlink and LEO satellites, ensuring that Pakistan’s satellite regulations align with international standards. The meeting also underscored the potential of LEO satellites in enhancing connectivity and promoting technological advancement.

The IT Ministry reaffirmed its dedication to developing a regulatory structure for satellite technology that adheres to global standards.

This meeting followed a previous statement by the state minister confirming that Starlink is already registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP). “The space board authority is currently assessing various technical aspects, and we have communicated this to Starlink,” Shaza Fatima Khawaja informed News Guru.
