The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a strict warning to mobile users regarding the use of tampered or patched phones, stating that violations could lead to heavy fines and even jail time.
As per the announcement, those caught using phones with altered IMEI numbers or other illegal modifications can face penalties of up to PKR 1 million, imprisonment for three years, or both. The PTA, in collaboration with the FIA, will enforce these rules by confiscating non-compliant devices and pursuing legal action under PECA 2016.

The core issue lies in IMEI tampering — a method used to bypass the official PTA registration process. Many of these phones enter Pakistan through grey channels and are sold to unsuspecting buyers, who may not be aware of the risks. However, PTA has clarified that ignorance will not be accepted as a defense.
To avoid penalties, users are urged to check their device’s status through PTA’s DIRBS system before purchase. Verification can be done via the official website, SMS to 8484, or the PTA mobile app. Buyers are also encouraged to purchase phones that are clearly marked as “PTA Approved.”
This move comes as part of PTA’s wider effort to regulate the telecom market, protect consumer rights, and curb illegal device imports.
