Rockstarโs Red Dead Redemption launched on mobile devices just over a month ago, and its performance has drawn mixed results. The premium $39.99 version of the game has earned roughly $430,000 from about 10,750 downloads, according to Appmagic estimates. In contrast, the free Netflix edition of Red Dead Redemption has already been installed around 3.3 million times.
Netflix announced the gameโs arrival during its major platform reboot in November, making the subscription-based version free for all active members. This strategy drove the bulk of downloads and positioned Red Dead Redemption as one of the biggest mobile releases since Netflix offered remastered PS2-era GTA titles last December. While GTA: San Andreas remained the most popular of that group, all three GTA games have since been removed from the platform.
Despite its relatively low premium revenue, Red Dead Redemption has performed better than several other console-to-mobile ports, including Resident Evil and Assassinโs Creed Mirage. Resident Evil 2 reportedly earned less than $100,000 in its first month, and Assassinโs Creed Mirage sold under 3,000 copies at its $49.99 price point, with availability limited to the latest iPhones and iPads.
The mobile market appears challenging for premium-priced console ports. Free-to-play titles generally outperform them, as seen with games like Clash of Clans, which can generate hundreds of thousands of dollars daily. Even recent releases such as Hitman: World of Assassination struggled to monetize, earning just over $130,000 from 226,000 downloads since its mobile debut in August 2025.
Analysts suggest the mixed results of Red Dead Redemption show that porting console classics to mobile with a premium price may not always succeed. However, the gameโs strong adoption on Netflix indicates that free-to-play subscription models remain effective for reaching larger audiences. Rockstarโs mobile experiment with Red Dead Redemption provides insight into how console franchises can expand their reach while navigating the challenges of mobile monetization.
The gameโs continued popularity on Netflix and its moderate success as a premium title highlight the evolving landscape for mobile gaming and the potential of hybrid distribution models for high-profile console releases.
