Sindh Launches Digital Platform To Promote Family Planning

The Sindh Population Welfare Department has introduced a new mobile application to provide confidential guidance on Family Planning and reproductive health. This initiative comes amid estimates of 3.6 million abortions occurring annually in Pakistan.

The app is designed for couples who hesitate to visit Family Planning centres due to privacy concerns or societal pressures. Users can access personalized advice, learn about modern contraceptive methods, and consult qualified healthcare professionals from the comfort of their homes. The platform also supports individuals experiencing complications related to contraception.

Sindh Population Welfare Secretary Hafeezullah Abbasi stated that the app was developed in collaboration with the World Bank and Pathfinder International, with approval from Health Minister Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho. Currently, the application is in a six-month pilot phase, after which it will be rolled out for public use.

Abbasi emphasized that user confidentiality will be strictly maintained. Personal and medical information will be securely handled, contributing to the departmentโ€™s electronic data network and improving monitoring and evaluation of reproductive health initiatives across the province.

โ€œThe app will make it easier for married couples to seek guidance without needing to visit centres for minor consultations,โ€ Abbasi said. He added that users can also locate nearby Family Planning clinics by sharing their location. The app provides information on clinic services, operating hours, and available doctors.

In addition to guidance on short- and long-term contraceptive methods, the platform includes FAQs and a dedicated helpline. Designed to work offline, the app ensures accessibility even in rural and remote areas with limited internet connectivity.

Officials believe the app will encourage more couples to actively engage in Family Planning, reducing unintended pregnancies and promoting better reproductive health outcomes. This initiative represents a step forward in making healthcare services more private, accessible, and convenient for communities across Sindh.
