Snap has unveiled Snap OS 2.0, the latest version of its operating system for AR Spectacles. The update introduces a native browser, WebXR experiences, and new tools designed to improve usability and creativity.
Native browser for smooth navigation
With Snap OS 2.0, users get a faster, more efficient browser built specifically for AR glasses. Page loading is optimized, and power consumption is reduced for longer use. The home screen now includes widgets and bookmarks, while an updated toolbar allows users to type or speak URLs. Navigation options like history, refresh, and window resizing make the browsing experience feel similar to a laptop.
Gallery Lens and memory sharing
A new Gallery Lens allows users to view, organize, and share captured videos directly from Spectacles. Users can scroll through a carousel, mark favorites, and post content to Stories without leaving the AR environment.
Travel Mode is another addition, stabilizing AR content during movement, such as in vehicles or airplanes. This ensures smooth tracking and uninterrupted AR experiences.
Spotlight Lens and vertical video
The Spotlight Lens overlays digital content into real-world settings. Users can watch videos from creators while performing daily tasks. The Spectaclesβ portrait-oriented field of view is optimized for vertical video, with Spotlight content either anchored or following the user as they move.
WebXR support and developer possibilities
Perhaps the most notable feature of Snap OS 2.0 is WebXR support. Users can now access augmented reality content directly from WebXR-enabled websites, offering creators and developers new ways to engage audiences.
The update follows Snapβs release of its fifth-generation Spectacles for developers last year. A consumer version of the AR glasses is expected in 2026. This launch comes ahead of Metaβs Connect conference, where competitors are likely to announce new AR and immersive technology features.
With Snap OS 2.0, Snap positions its Spectacles as a versatile AR platform, combining smooth navigation, immersive content, and enhanced creative tools for users and developers alike.
