SnapChat Abandons Three-Tab Redesign After User Backlash

Snap has scrapped its controversial three-tab redesign for Snapchat after receiving significant pushback from its core user base. The company confirmed the decision in its Q1 2025 earnings report, noting that the simplified design, which replaced the Snap Map and Stories tabs with a focus on Chat, Camera, and Spotlight, was unpopular among long-time users.

CEO Evan Spiegel acknowledged that the new layout created difficulties, particularly for power users who were accustomed to the removed features. “We found it difficult, especially for power users, to adopt the three-tab design,” Spiegel explained. After a seven-month trial period, Snap is now shifting its focus to a five-tab layout that keeps popular features like Snap Map and Stories while making Spotlight more prominent.

Despite the redesign setback, Snap reported solid financial performance, with a 14% year-on-year revenue increase, reaching $1.36 billion in Q1 2025. The growth was attributed to improved advertising tools and an increase in Snapchat+ subscriptions. Snap also reported a 55% year-on-year increase in My AI usage in the US, hinting at further AI and AR innovations later this year.

The company also saw growth in global daily active users, reaching 460 million, although North America experienced a slight dip, with DAUs falling by 1 million to 99 million. Monthly active users surpassed 900 million, reflecting continued global expansion.
