Snapchat is introducing a new feature called โTopic Chats,โ allowing users to discuss trending events and shared interests. The feature marks a shift from Snapchatโs traditional focus on private messaging.
Topic Chats cover a wide range of subjects, from Formula 1 racing to the reality show โBelow Deck.โ Users can join these chatrooms while maintaining profile privacy, as Snapchat ensures that only display names are visible next to messages. Unlike usernames, display names cannot be used to search for someone or access their profile.
The company told TechCrunch that Topic Chats will be moderated using large language models (LLMs) and other safety measures. All messages must comply with Snapchatโs Community Guidelines, and users can report inappropriate content. Snapchat may issue warnings or block accounts for violations.
To help users find chats related to their interests, the platform will show which Topic Chats their friends have joined. In addition, these chats will be linked to Spotlight videos, Snapchatโs short-form TikTok-style content.
Snapchat explained that the idea for Topic Chats emerged after observing the popularity of public commenting on Spotlight videos. The company aims to create a safe, moderated environment where users can engage in discussions about trending topics while maintaining privacy.
Topic Chats will be rolled out over the next few weeks in Canada, New Zealand, and the U.S. Users can access these chats through Chat shortcuts, search results, the Stories page, or Spotlight videos. Joining a chat is simpleโclick the large yellow โJoin the Chatโ button that appears on a Story or video.
Messages in Topic Chats will be stored for up to five years, providing users the opportunity to revisit conversations. Snapchat hopes the feature will encourage broader interaction and help its community engage more publicly while staying safe.
