US Probes DeepSeek’s Use of Banned Chips Amid AI Accuracy Concerns

The US Commerce Department is investigating whether Chinese AI company DeepSeek has been using prohibited US-made chips, raising concerns about China’s AI advancements.

Despite its rapid rise to becoming the most downloaded app on Apple’s App Store, DeepSeek’s chatbot performed poorly in a NewsGuard audit, achieving only 17% accuracy in news responses. The chatbot failed 83% of the time, performing worse than its Western counterparts like ChatGPT and Google Gemini.

Italy’s data protection authority has also blocked DeepSeek’s AI chatbot over privacy concerns, citing inadequate responses about its data collection and storage practices. Similar concerns have been raised in Ireland and France.
