WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature aimed at giving users better control over incoming messages. Currently in development, the update will allow users to manage messages from unknown contacts more effectively.
The feature introduces a new privacy setting called “Who can message me,” offering two main requests options. The first option, “Everyone,” maintains the current default, where messages from any contact appear directly in the chat list.
The second option, “My Contacts,” enhances user control by sending messages from non-contacts into a separate folder called Requests. This prevents unknown messages from appearing immediately in the main chat area, allowing users to handle conversations more selectively.
The Requests folder works similarly to Instagram’s “Message Requests.” Messages from people outside a user’s contact list are held in this folder until the recipient chooses to respond. This keeps the primary chat screen organized and reduces unwanted interruptions.
Importantly, this update does not block messages; it only changes how they are displayed. Users still receive all messages, but those from unknown contacts appear in the Requests folder, giving them more flexibility in managing chats.
This development aligns with WhatsApp’s ongoing goal of enhancing user privacy and personalization. By allowing users to filter incoming messages, the platform aims to increase both satisfaction and security for its millions of users worldwide.
The new Requests feature is expected to roll out in a future WhatsApp update for both Android and iOS devices. Tech analysts suggest that this addition could reduce spam and improve the overall messaging experience, particularly for users with high-volume chat activity.
