WhatsApp’s New Media Control Feature Lets Users Pick Download Quality

WhatsApp

WhatsApp is rolling out a much-needed feature for beta users, giving them control over the quality of media downloaded automatically. Users can now choose between standard and HD quality for incoming photos and videos.

Available in WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.25.18.11, the feature is tucked into the Storage and Data settings. It aims to reduce the burden of heavy media files on limited data plans and storage, especially in group chats.

Behind the scenes, WhatsApp now uploads both HD and standard versions of media files. The recipientโ€™s app then picks the version based on user preferencesโ€”no more unnecessary data usage unless you want it.

This smart upgrade also allows users to request HD versions later if needed, making it flexible for all types of users. While itโ€™s currently limited to beta testers, a global rollout is expected soon.
