WhatsApp is rolling out a much-needed feature for beta users, giving them control over the quality of media downloaded automatically. Users can now choose between standard and HD quality for incoming photos and videos.
Available in WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.25.18.11, the feature is tucked into the Storage and Data settings. It aims to reduce the burden of heavy media files on limited data plans and storage, especially in group chats.

Behind the scenes, WhatsApp now uploads both HD and standard versions of media files. The recipient’s app then picks the version based on user preferences—no more unnecessary data usage unless you want it.
This smart upgrade also allows users to request HD versions later if needed, making it flexible for all types of users. While it’s currently limited to beta testers, a global rollout is expected soon.
