WhatsApp’s Unremovable AI Assistant Sparks User Backlash Over Privacy and Control

WhatsApp’s newly introduced Meta AI chatbot has triggered a wave of user frustration, particularly over the inability to remove the feature from the app. Despite Meta describing the tool as “entirely optional,” the AI assistant—symbolized by a permanent blue circle on the Chats screen—cannot be disabled, drawing criticism across social media and privacy circles.

Many users have compared the rollout to controversial tech launches like Microsoft’s Recall, arguing that such “features” erode user control. WhatsApp responded by likening the AI tool to other permanent features like ‘channels’ or ‘status,’ claiming it enhances user experience and that feedback is being reviewed.

The AI chatbot is powered by Meta’s Llama 4 model and designed to offer quick answers, educational support, and creative input. It’s currently rolling out selectively across regions and is being integrated into other Meta platforms like Instagram and Facebook Messenger. Still, concerns persist around how the tool interacts with user data and the level of transparency offered.

Critics, including AI and privacy specialist Dr Kris Shrishak, argue that Meta is using its massive user base to test AI features under questionable privacy standards. Legal challenges are also mounting over the alleged use of pirated books to train Meta’s AI models, with writer groups demanding regulatory action.

While Meta maintains that only direct chats with the AI are accessible to the company and all other conversations remain encrypted, the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office is closely monitoring the situation—particularly regarding how minors’ data may be affected.
