Govt Considers Removing PTV Fee from Electricity Bills for Additional Relief to Power Consumers

The Pakistani government has significantly reduced electricity tariffs, lowering domestic rates by Rs7.41 per unit ahead of the summer season. In addition, the government is considering the removal of the Pakistan Television (PTV) fee from electricity bills.

The Ministry of Energy has reportedly prepared a plan to abolish this surcharge, which is currently applied to domestic, industrial, and commercial consumers. Presently, domestic users pay Rs35 monthly for the PTV fee, while both industrial and commercial sectors are also charged.

This move to eliminate the fee follows instructions from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who has directed the removal of unnecessary surcharges to reduce the financial burden on the public.

The PTV fee generates about Rs1.5 billion annually from approximately 42.6 million consumers, and its removal is expected to simplify electricity billing and lower overall consumer costs.

In addition to this, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif introduced a new electricity tariff structure last week, providing relief across various sectors. Domestic rates have decreased from Rs45.05 to Rs37.64 per unit, a reduction of Rs7.15.

Commercial consumers will benefit from a Rs8.58 decrease, with rates dropping from Rs71.06 to Rs62.47, while industrial users will see a reduction of Rs7.69, from Rs48.19 to Rs40.51. Other sectors, including agriculture and general services, will also experience tariff cuts, offering broader relief to key economic areas.
