In a dramatic political turn, 33-year-old Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist and current New York State Assemblyman, pulled off a major upset by securing enough votes to become the likely Democratic nominee for New York City mayor. His unexpected victory on Tuesday night sent shockwaves through political circles and drew immediate criticism from former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Taking to Truth Social, Trump unleashed a series of personal attacks on Mamdani, ridiculing his appearance, voice, intelligence, and political ideology. “Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary, and is on his way to becoming Mayor,” Trump wrote.

“We’ve had Radical Lefties before, but this is getting a little ridiculous. He looks TERRIBLE, his voice is grating, he’s not very smart.”
In another post, Trump mocked congressional Democrats who support Mamdani, including Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. He also took aim at Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, calling him “our Great Palestinian Senator” and accusing him of “groveling” before Mamdani.
Mamdani, who represents Astoria, Queens in the State Assembly since 2021, is now at the center of a highly anticipated general election that is expected to serve as a national test for the future of progressive politics.
His policy platform includes proposals to make city buses free, halt rent hikes on rent-stabilized housing, and establish city-operated grocery stores—all to be funded through a proposed $10 billion tax increase on large businesses and high-income earners.
His outspoken pro-Palestinian stance has also sparked controversy. Mamdani has actively participated in rallies supporting the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement and has promised to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should he enter New York City, citing an International Criminal Court warrant issued in late 2024.
Mamdani’s rise has energized progressive voters while alarming conservatives, setting the stage for a fiercely contested mayoral race that could reflect broader national divisions over economic justice, foreign policy, and the direction of the Democratic Party.
