10 newborns killed in fire at Indian hospital’s neonatal unit

A tragic fire at the neonatal intensive care unit of Maharani Laxmibai Medical College in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, claimed the lives of 10 newborns late Friday. The blaze affected 49 infants in the ward, with emergency responders rescuing 38.

Seventeen injured infants are under treatment, while one remains missing. Authorities have identified seven of the deceased and are working to confirm the others.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, with Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath ordering an inquiry. PM Narendra Modi expressed condolences, calling it a “heart-wrenching” tragedy.
