The victims included children, women, and the elderly, with some injuries critical enough to require transport to Kabul for treatment. The local authorities have expressed deep regret and launched an investigation into the cause of the accidents.
The scenes at the crash sites were harrowing, with debris scattered across the area and the buses badly damaged. One survivor described the chaos, recalling the sight of people trapped under the vehicles and the widespread bloodshed.
Traffic accidents are common in Afghanistan, largely due to poor road conditions and a lack of regulatory enforcement.
