Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed has declared himself senator-elect after taking a substantial lead in Michigan’s US Senate race. He addressed supporters as the results showed him ahead of Republican candidate Mike Rogers. El-Sayed is seeking to succeed retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters. His reported victory would make him the first Muslim elected to the United States Senate.

According to the reported results, El-Sayed received 1,995,543 votes. This represents 51.8% of the counted ballots. Republican Mike Rogers secured 1,779,101 votes, or 46.2%. However, the vote count was still underway when the figures were reported. Authorities had counted approximately 77.6% of the estimated total vote. Around 1.1 million ballots were still outstanding.

According to NBC News, Rogers would need approximately 58.7% of the remaining votes to overtake El-Sayed. The final outcome therefore remained dependent on the outstanding ballots. A physician, epidemiologist and progressive politician, El-Sayed focused his campaign on healthcare and economic issues. His main priorities included universal healthcare, lower living costs and stronger support for workers.

He also brought public health administration experience to the Senate race. El-Sayed served as director of the Detroit Health Department from 2015 to 2017. Later, he led Wayne County’s Department of Health, Human and Veterans Services from 2023 to 2025.

Before entering electoral politics, Abdul El-Sayed developed a career in medicine, research and education. He earned his medical degree from Columbia University. He also completed a doctorate in public health at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. In addition, he taught epidemiology at Columbia University. He later hosted America Dissected, a podcast covering public health issues.

El-Sayed first attracted national attention during Michigan’s 2018 Democratic gubernatorial primary. His progressive campaign helped establish his profile in American politics. He returned to the electoral contest in 2026. He defeated US Representative Haley Stevens in the Democratic primary. That victory secured his nomination for the Senate seat.

Healthcare remained a central issue throughout his campaign. El-Sayed supports universal coverage and co-authored the book Medicare for All: A Citizen’s Guide. His economic proposals also focus on reducing financial pressure on families. He supports labour unions and wants to limit corporate influence in politics.

El-Sayed has also highlighted his public service record in Michigan. He credits a medical debt relief initiative with eliminating $700 million in debt for residents. He has further pointed to efforts addressing lead exposure in schools. These initiatives also included providing free eyeglasses to children.

If his lead holds after the remaining ballots are counted, Abdul El-Sayed would take his public health experience and progressive agenda to Washington. His reported success would also mark a historic moment for Muslim representation in the US Senate.
