Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms has defeated Republican businessman Rick Jackson in Georgia’s gubernatorial election. Her victory makes her the first Black woman elected governor of a US state. It also marks a major change in Georgia’s political leadership.

The November 3, 2026, election ended more than two decades of Republican control over Georgia’s governor’s office. Bottoms will succeed outgoing Republican Governor Brian Kemp. She is expected to take office in January 2027.

Keisha Lance Bottoms’ victory represents an important milestone for American politics. Georgia has remained a closely contested state in recent elections. Democrats have worked to expand their support among Black voters, suburban communities and other key electoral groups.

Her victory also marks a setback for Republican candidate Rick Jackson. The billionaire businessman entered the election seeking his first public office. He is the founder of Jackson Healthcare, a major healthcare staffing company.

Jackson built his campaign around tax reductions, public safety and fewer government regulations. However, he was unable to secure the governor’s office against Bottoms.

Who Is Keisha Lance Bottoms?

Before entering the Georgia governor’s race, Bottoms had established herself as a prominent Democratic politician. She served as mayor of Atlanta from 2018 to 2022. Her tenure included several major challenges for the city. These included the COVID-19 pandemic and nationwide protests against racial injustice. Her experience during this period helped strengthen her political profile.

After leaving the mayor’s office, Bottoms joined former President Joe Biden’s administration. She served as a senior adviser and director of the White House Office of Public Engagement. This role expanded her experience in national politics.

The 2026 elections also brought historic achievements for other Black political leaders. Stacey Plaskett won the gubernatorial election in the US Virgin Islands. She became the first Black woman elected governor of a US jurisdiction.

Meanwhile, Republican Byron Donalds won Florida’s gubernatorial election. His victory made him the first Black Republican elected governor of a US state. These results highlighted increased representation among Black political leaders across different jurisdictions and parties.

Bottoms’ achievement also follows years of Democratic efforts to strengthen their position in Georgia. Former gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams played a major role in those efforts.

Abrams became the first Black woman nominated for governor by a major US political party in 2018. She later contested the 2022 election but did not win. Her campaigns helped expand Democratic voter mobilisation and strengthen the party’s organisation across Georgia.
