LONDON – Two Afghan teens have been sentenced for abducting and assaulting a 15-year-old girl in the United Kingdom. The incident has left the victim with long-term psychological trauma and disrupted her education.
The Afghan teens, 17-year-old Jan Jahanzeb and Israr Niazal, were sentenced at Warwick Crown Court. Both were ordered to remain on the offender register for life. The court also recommended possible deportation after their sentences are completed.
The court heard that the Afghan teens lured the girl to a hidden “den-type” area in Leamington Spa last May. There, they physically attacked her, causing severe trauma. Judge De Bertodano said, “What you did that night changed her life forever,” noting that the attackers stole the girl’s childhood.
A statement from the victim revealed the lasting impact of the assault. She said the attack made her feel unsafe outside and caused her to avoid social activities. Her education suffered, and she continues to struggle with anxiety. Her mother added that the teenager’s wellbeing had dramatically declined, affecting the entire family.
Both defendants had admitted to the offences before the trial. Jahanzeb, already served with deportation papers due to his age at the time of pleading guilty, was sentenced to 10 years and eight months in youth detention. Niazal, who was 16 at the time of his plea, received nine years and 10 months. The Home Office has been asked to consider his deportation as well.
The Afghan teens will initially serve time in a young offender institution before being transferred to adult prison. They were also issued indefinite restraining orders alongside their lifetime registration as sex offenders.
