Afghanistan Urges Inclusion in Future Climate Talks

Afghanistan

An Afghan official has called for the country’s inclusion in global climate discussions following its first appearance at COP29 in Baku. This marked Afghanistan’s return to climate talks after the Taliban took power in 2021.

The Afghan delegation attended COP29 as “guests” invited by Azerbaijan. Despite this limited role, Matiul Haq Khalis, director general of Afghanistan’s National Environmental Protection Agency, hailed the participation as a significant step.

“Afghanistan must participate in such conferences in the future,” Khalis said during a press conference, emphasizing the importance of addressing the nation’s environmental challenges on a global platform.

Afghanistan had been excluded from the last two climate summits in Egypt and the UAE. The country’s attendance in Baku signals a potential shift in its engagement with international climate discussions.
