Armenia has announced that it is suspending negotiations to buy the Indian Tejas fighter jet after a fatal crash at the Dubai Airshow on Saturday. The decision comes after the aircraft went down during an aerobatic performance, killing its pilot, Wing Commander Namansh Sial.
Armenia had been in advanced discussions with India and the aircraft manufacturer, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), for the purchase of 12 Tejas jets. The deal, valued at $1.2 billion, was expected to be the first export agreement for the aircraft. Armeniaโs move puts the future of the negotiations on hold as officials seek clarity on the cause of the crash.
The Tejas jet project began in 1982 as part of Indiaโs long-term plan to grow its military aviation industry and strengthen its position as both a major arms buyer and exporter. The aircraft was designed to replace Indiaโs aging MiG-21 fleet, which was officially retired this year. The Indian Air Force has so far received 40 Tejas jets from the first production batch.
India is now preparing to produce 97 advanced A1 variants of the Tejas. These upgraded models include major improvements based on Western standards, especially with the integration of Israeli technology. The A1 version will feature AESA radar from Elta, electronic warfare systems, and new helmet-mounted displays from Elbit. The aircraft will also carry Derby radar-guided missiles produced by Rafael.
The Dubai crash has raised concerns about the Tejas programme. It remains unclear whether the incident was caused by mechanical failure or human error. However, analysts say the accident may hurt the jetโs reputation, and if Armenia cancels the deal entirely, Israeli Aerospace Industries could lose millions in expected revenue.
The crash also sparked criticism at the event. Major Taylor Hiester, commander of the US Air Force F-16 Viper Team, publicly questioned the decision to continue the airshow after the fatal accident. Out of respect for the Indian pilot, his team cancelled their final performance.

Armenia is expected to reassess the negotiations once the investigation provides clear findings.
