Violent Protests Erupt in Bangladesh After Death of ‘Anti-India’ Youth Leader Osman Hadi

DHAKA – Bangladesh has been shaken by the killing of youth leader Osman Hadi, whose death has sparked widespread unrest across the country. Hadi was a prominent political figure and played a visible role in protests that led to the downfall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed’s government.

The death of Osman Hadi triggered violent demonstrations in Dhaka, including arson attacks and clashes with law enforcement. Several media offices were also targeted as tensions escalated. In response, the interim government declared a one-day national mourning to honor his memory and calm the situation.

Hadi was shot last week as he stepped out of a mosque in the capital. Witnesses said unknown gunmen, wearing face coverings, opened fire and fled immediately. He was critically wounded and rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital before being transferred to a private facility. Doctors later moved him to Singapore for advanced treatment, but he died on Thursday after days of medical care.

The killing occurred just one day after the interim government announced the date for general elections. Hadi had planned to contest the polls as an independent candidate. This timing has raised serious concerns about political motives behind the attack.

Public anger had been building since the shooting, but the situation worsened after confirmation of his death. Hundreds of supporters poured into the streets, chanting slogans and confronting security forces. The protests turned violent when demonstrators stormed the offices of leading newspapers, including The Daily Star, setting at least one building on fire.

Osman Hadi emerged as a leading voice of the Inqilab Mancha student movement. He was known for his strong anti-India position and his vocal criticism of the Awami League. Before his death, Hadi had publicly warned that his life was in danger and claimed he had received repeated threats from unknown callers.

He was born in Barisal and had a diverse educational background. Hadi first studied at a religious madrasa before earning a degree in Political Science from the University of Dhaka. At the time of his death, he was teaching at a private university.

Political parties across Bangladesh have demanded a swift investigation. Interim government head Muhammad Yunus called Hadi’s death an irreparable loss while warning against further violence. The crisis unfolds as Bangladesh continues a fragile political transition following last year’s deadly protests that ended Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year rule.
