The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has elected Nitin Nabin as its new national president. This marks a major generational change for the party.
Nitin Nabin, aged 45, took charge on Tuesday in New Delhi. He succeeds JP Nadda, who is 65. The election happened unopposed at the BJP headquarters.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other top leaders attended the ceremony. Hundreds of party workers watched as Nabin took the oath. He wore the party symbol on a scarf and had a vermillion mark on his forehead.
Modi praised Nabin and called him the “boss.” He described himself as a party worker under Nabin’s leadership. Nabin will serve a three-year term as the BJP’s 12th national president.
Nabin is a five-time legislator from Bihar. He comes from Patna West constituency. He entered politics after his father’s death in 2006. His father was a senior BJP leader.
In his speech, Nabin thanked Modi as a key generational leader. He urged young Indians to join politics actively. More than 40% of India’s voters are aged 18 to 39, according to estimates.
This move aims to attract younger voters. It comes after the BJP faced challenges in the 2024 general election. Modi lost his outright majority then and relied on allies.
Since then, the party has bounced back. It won several state and local polls. Today, the BJP and its allies govern 19 out of India’s 28 states.
The timing is important. Key state elections are coming soon. One focus is West Bengal, where the BJP has not won yet.
Nabin’s background from Bihar, one of India’s poorer states, adds to the shift. Leaders see it as a way to connect with diverse voters.
Party workers welcomed the change. It shows focus on fresh energy and youth involvement.
This leadership transition strengthens the BJP’s organisation. It prepares the party for future challenges and elections.
Observers note the emphasis on grassroots workers. Nabin rose from a party activist to the top post.

The decision reflects Modi’s trust in younger leaders. It aims to keep the party dynamic and voter-focused.
