A tanker was targeted in an attack off the Turkish coast on Tuesday morning, just days after two other tankers faced similar incidents.
The vessel, Midvolga 2, reported that it was attacked 80 nautical miles off Turkey’s coast while sailing from Russia to Georgia with 13 crew members on board. According to Turkey’s maritime affairs directorate, the tanker was carrying sunflower oil and currently has no reported casualties or requests for assistance.
The ship was heading toward the port of Sinop, located along Turkey’s central Black Sea coast, which stretches approximately 1,600 kilometers. Officials confirmed that the crew remains safe and no adverse conditions were reported following the attack.
Earlier incidents involved two other tankers that were hit by explosions off the Turkish coast. A Ukrainian security source claimed responsibility, stating drones had targeted vessels “covertly transporting Russian oil,” according to AFP.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the drone strikes, calling them a “worrying escalation.” He said these attacks threaten navigation, the environment, and lives within Turkey’s exclusive economic zone.
“The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has clearly reached a stage where it threatens the safety of navigation in the Black Sea,” Erdogan added. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further incidents.
The repeated attacks have raised concerns about maritime security in the Black Sea, which is a critical route for regional trade. Shipping companies are advised to remain vigilant and follow all safety protocols while traversing the area.
The international community has urged restraint, emphasizing that targeting civilian vessels could escalate tensions and endanger lives. Investigations into the recent attack are ongoing, with maritime authorities coordinating closely with regional partners to ensure the safety of shipping lanes.
