Bloody Red Moon to Light Up the Sky – How and Where to Watch

Skywatchers are in for an incredible show as a Red Moon is set to illuminate the skies across Australia, the United States, and parts of Asia next month. NASA confirmed that the stunning phenomenon will occur during a total lunar eclipse in March.

During the eclipse, the Earth will come directly between the sun and the moon, blocking direct sunlight. This causes the moon to take on a red hue, creating what is popularly called a Red Moon or blood moon. The total eclipse will be visible in cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle, while partial phases can be observed across a wider region.

Scientists explain that the red color appears because sunlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere during the eclipse. Shorter blue wavelengths scatter, while longer red and orange wavelengths bend around the planet, casting a red glow onto the moon. Normally, the moon reflects sunlight and appears pearly or cream-colored.

AccuWeather meteorologist Emily Speck noted, “Farther east, skywatchers will still be able to see portions of the partial eclipse, but not totality.” The blood moon is expected to begin at approximately 3:33 a.m. EST, with totality lasting for around an hour. However, the partial eclipse will be visible for several hours before and after totality.

Astronomy enthusiasts are advised to find locations with minimal light pollution for the best view. Telescopes and cameras can enhance the experience, but the eclipse is visible to the naked eye. Many are already planning viewing events and photo sessions to capture the rare celestial event.
