California Wildfire Grows Twice Its Size, Becomes Largest

Thousands of firefighters are tackling a rapidly expanding wildfire in northern California, which has more than doubled in size within a 24-hour period. As of Saturday evening, the Park Fire had burned over 350,000 acres, situated approximately 90 miles north of Sacramento. The fire was 10% contained, with cooler temperatures and increased humidity expected to help control its spread.

The blaze has already destroyed 134 structures, leading to evacuation orders and warnings for multiple communities, including Paradise, which was devastated by the 2018 Camp Fire. President Joe Biden has been briefed on the situation and has instructed his team to provide all necessary support for firefighting efforts.

A man was arrested on Thursday, suspected of starting the Park Fire by pushing a burning car into a gully. The fire is the largest among numerous active blazes across the U.S., which have collectively burned over 2 million acres.

In addition to the Park Fire, other significant blazes include the Durkee Fire in Oregon, which has scorched more than 288,000 acres, and a firefighter’s death resulting from a tanker crash near the Falls Fire.
