Authorities have classified the incident as an intentional attack, with the suspect, a 50-year-old Saudi doctor, apprehended at the scene.
The devastating event occurred around 7 pm local time (18:00 GMT) when the vehicle sped through the bustling market, leaving destruction in its path. Among the injured, 15 remain in critical condition, 37 sustained moderate injuries, and 16 suffered minor harm, according to local government reports.

Chancellor Scholz Shares Condolences
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, stating, “The reports from Magdeburg suggest something terrible has happened. My thoughts are with the victims and their families.” Scholz announced plans to visit the site on Saturday to support the grieving community.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Scholz thanked the dedicated rescue workers and reaffirmed solidarity with the residents of Magdeburg during this difficult time.
Tamara Zieschang, Saxony-Anhalt’s interior minister, identified the suspect as a Saudi doctor who has been residing in Germany since 2006. Authorities confirmed the suspect had no prior links to security services.
Saxony-Anhalt Premier Reiner Haseloff revealed that the deceased were a child and an adult, emphasizing, “Every human life lost is a terrible tragedy and one too many.” He reassured the public that the attacker acted alone and posed no further threat to the city.
