Curfew Imposed in Nepal’s Birgunj After Mosque Vandalism Triggers Protests

Curfew Imposed in Nepal’s Birgunj After Mosque Vandalism Triggers Protests

A Curfew has been imposed in Birgunj, a major city in southern Nepal near the Indian border. The decision followed violent protests over the vandalism of a mosque. The incident has raised serious concerns about law and order in the region.

According to reports, Hindu extremist groups attacked a mosque on Sunday. The attackers vandalised the building and looted property inside. The act deeply angered the local Muslim community and caused widespread distress.

Soon after the incident, large numbers of Muslims gathered to protest. Demonstrations were reported in Dhanusha district’s Kamala Municipality. Protesters demanded action against those responsible for the desecration.

As tensions escalated, clashes broke out between protesters and police. Law enforcement used tear gas to control the crowd. Several protesters were detained during the operation, according to local media.

Following the unrest, the Parsa District Administration announced a Curfew across Birgunj. The order bans public movement on city streets. It also restricts all forms of gatherings, protests, and demonstrations.

Officials stated that strict measures are necessary to restore calm. Security forces have been authorised to take strong action. Authorities confirmed that personnel may open fire on those violating the Curfew orders.

Birgunj is located around 130 kilometres south of Kathmandu. It is a key trade and transit hub for Nepal. The city serves as a major entry point for fuel, goods, and supplies from India.

Due to the tense situation, Indian authorities have also taken action. Reports say the Nepal–India border near Birgunj has been completely sealed. Security has been tightened to prevent any spillover of unrest.

Clashes between Hindus and Muslims are rare in Nepal. The country is predominantly Hindu. Most of Nepal’s Muslim population lives in southern border regions.

Analysts say the incident is unusual for the area. They stress the importance of dialogue and restraint. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.

So far, no timeline has been given for lifting the Curfew. Officials say the restrictions will remain until peace is fully restored. Residents have been urged to stay indoors and follow official instructions.
