Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has introduced a new initiative under the AI for Safe Cities project to reduce motorcycle accidents by half. The program uses artificial intelligence, smart cameras, and telematics to improve rider safety and monitor driving behavior across the city.
According to Saeed Al Ramsi, Director at RTA, the system collects real-time data to identify violations such as speeding, harsh braking, or driving in the wrong direction. It also ensures delivery riders wear proper uniforms and follow road safety standards.
The AI for Safe Cities system includes facial recognition technology to detect distracted riding, such as when riders use their phones while driving. Each motorcycle is also equipped with a geofencing tracker to make sure riders stay within their assigned delivery zones. “Some riders exceed their designated areas, increasing the risk of accidents. This system will prevent that,” Al Ramsi explained.
Currently, the technology is being tested on 12,000 motorcycles from different delivery companies. The RTA plans to expand the project nationwide by mid-2026, eventually covering around 65,000 delivery bikes across the UAE.
In later stages, the system will connect with UAE Pass and Emirates ID databases to verify rider identities and vehicle details. This will help ensure that only licensed and authorized drivers operate delivery motorcycles.
RTA officials said the goal of AI for Safe Cities is to make roads safer for everyone by using modern technology to detect and prevent dangerous behavior. Fleet managers will also receive automated reports to review rider performance and organize safety training sessions.
Dubai’s new initiative reflects the government’s commitment to using innovation for public safety. Authorities believe the use of AI can set a global example in building smarter, safer cities.
