SYDNEY – Authorities have identified the two alleged gunmen behind the Australia Bondi shooting as a father and son, as the nation mourns its deadliest attack in nearly 30 years. The incident, which targeted a Jewish Hanukkah celebration, claimed 16 lives, including the 50-year-old father who was killed at the scene. His 24-year-old son remains in critical condition in hospital.
State broadcaster ABC and local media named the father as Sajid Akram and his son as Naveed Akram. Police described the attack as a targeted antisemitic act. Around 1,000 people were attending the celebration in a small park near Bondi Beach when the shooting occurred. Witnesses said the attack lasted about 10 minutes, causing panic among attendees.
Forty people remain hospitalized, including two police officers in serious but stable condition. Victims ranged in age from 10 to 87. A bystander, Ahmed Al-Ahmed, 43, tackled and disarmed one of the shooters. Ahmed, who was shot twice during the incident, underwent surgery and is recovering. A fundraising campaign for him has raised over A$350,000 ($233,000).
Police revealed that the father held a firearms license since 2015 and owned six licensed weapons. Authorities confirmed only two attackers were involved, and a heavy police presence remains at their Bonnyrigg home. Footage showed the men firing what appeared to be a bolt-action rifle and a shotgun.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited Bondi Beach to pay respects, calling the attack “an act of pure evil, an act of antisemitism, an act of terrorism on our shores.” He urged Australians to light candles in solidarity with the Jewish community.
The Australia Bondi shooting is the deadliest mass shooting in the country since the 1996 Port Arthur massacre. Leaders worldwide, including U.S. President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron, offered condolences and support.
Local communities have set up memorials at Bondi Pavilion and online condolence books. Security at Jewish events has increased across Australia and internationally. The attack has left a solemn atmosphere in Bondi, with residents and officials emphasizing unity and support for the Jewish community.
