A tragic shooting in New York City on Monday evening resulted in the deaths of four people, including a New York Police Department officer.
The gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, opened fire inside a Midtown Manhattan office building, before being fatally shot by law enforcement.
The incident took place around 6 PM local time at 345 Park Avenue, a high-rise that houses major firms such as Blackstone, KPMG, and Deutsche Bank, as well as the NFL’s headquarters. Police say Tamura arrived in a black BMW and immediately began shooting upon entering the building’s lobby.
His first victim was NYPD officer Didarul Islam, 36, who was stationed at the building for routine security duties. Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh, was remembered by Mayor Eric Adams as a hero, having died protecting New Yorkers. He leaves behind a wife and two children, with a third on the way.
The gunman continued his attack, killing a civilian woman and a security guard on the building’s ground floor. He then proceeded to the 33rd floor, where he fatally shot another man.
Another person was injured during the attack and is receiving medical treatment, but their condition remains undisclosed. Authorities later neutralized the suspect on the 33rd floor.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and investigations are underway. New York police, along with the FBI and Homeland Security, are reviewing surveillance footage and speaking with witnesses to gather more information.
This tragedy has prompted a wave of grief throughout New York, with flags ordered to fly at half-mast in honor of Officer Islam and the other victims.
The shooting comes just hours after another mass shooting in Reno, Nevada, raising concerns over rising gun violence across the United States.
The two incidents have sparked renewed debates over gun control and public safety in the country. As New York grapples with the aftermath, law enforcement continues to investigate both attacks.
