Kuala Lumpur, January 8, 2026 โ A former Malaysian army chief and his two wives were among five people detained on Wednesday in a corruption probe into a military procurement project. Authorities said the investigation targets payments allegedly made to the account of a senior army officer.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) confirmed the detentions but did not release the names of all suspects. Local media reported that former army chief Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan and his two wives were arrested. A married couple was also among those held.
Hafizuddeain had been placed on leave in late December pending scrutiny of his conduct. The MACC has been conducting raids on several companies connected to the case since late last year. Officials also seized six bank accounts belonging to an unidentified suspect and family members as part of the corruption probe.
In addition, the agency foiled an attempt to move 2.4 million ringgit ($591,000) in cash linked to the investigation. National news agency Bernama reported that the money was intercepted when an individual tied to the case tried to relocate it.
โMACC is committed to carrying out investigations with full transparency and professionalism,โ the agency said in a statement. Chief Commissioner Azam Baki confirmed the detentions but did not provide further details about the suspects.
Authorities have not disclosed the exact nature of the payments or how the military procurement project was affected. However, the move highlights Malaysiaโs ongoing efforts to tackle corruption in key state institutions.
Experts say the corruption probe underscores the anti-graft agencyโs focus on transparency and accountability. MACC has gained attention in recent years for taking action against high-profile officials involved in financial misconduct.
Investigations are ongoing, and officials say more arrests could follow as evidence is gathered. The public and media are closely watching the case, which could have implications for military administration and broader governance reforms.
