The United Nations officially declared May 24 as the International Day of the Markhor, with the inaugural observance held in 2024. The day aims to rally conservation efforts, foster regional cooperation, and raise awareness about the species’ plight.

Although its population has shown slight improvement, threats such as habitat degradation, poaching, and climate change continue to endanger the species. With only around 5,700 mature individuals left in the wild, experts stress the need for immediate conservation action.
