A gunman killed two people and wounded nine others on Saturday at Brown University in Rhode Island, forcing the Ivy League campus into lockdown. Hundreds of police and FBI agents searched for the suspect late into the night.
The shooting occurred at the Barus and Holley building, home to the engineering and physics departments. Two exams were taking place at the time, heightening chaos as students scrambled for safety.
Eyewitness Katie Sun told the Brown Daily Herald she was studying nearby when she heard gunfire. “It was honestly quite terrifying. The shots seemed like they were coming from… where the classrooms are,” she said.
Authorities confirmed that ten of the 11 victims were students. Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said two individuals had died, while eight others were in critical but stable condition. A ninth person was hospitalized after being hit by fragments from the shooting.
Police released ten seconds of footage showing the suspect walking briskly down a deserted street. The man, dressed entirely in black, opened fire inside a first-floor classroom before fleeing. No weapon had been recovered.
Brown University President Christina Paxson said the campus remained in lockdown as midnight approached. “My heart breaks for the students who were looking forward to a holiday break and instead are dealing with another horrifying mass shooting,” she said.
Deputy Police Chief Timothy O’Hara urged residents to follow shelter-in-place orders strictly. “We’re utilizing every resource possible to find this suspect. Please do not come to the area,” he said.
The shooting is part of a long-standing pattern of school attacks in the United States, where debates over gun control continue amid political deadlock. Law enforcement and first responders reported clothing and blood on the sidewalks outside the university.
US President Donald Trump commented on the tragedy, saying, “What a terrible thing it is. All we can do right now is pray for the victims.”
