Hong Kong Authorities Arrest 13 In Probe As Death Toll Hits 151

Hong Kong authorities have arrested 13 people for suspected manslaughter in a probe as death toll from the cityโ€™s deadliest fire reaches 151. Investigators say substandard renovation materials helped fuel the blaze at Wang Fuk Court estate.

Police continue their search of the seven burnt-out towers, finding victims trapped in stairwells and on rooftops. More than 40 people remain missing. โ€œSome bodies have turned into ash, so we might not locate all missing individuals,โ€ said police official Tsang Shuk-yin.

Tests revealed that green mesh wrapped around bamboo scaffolding did not meet fire-retardant standards. Foam insulation also worsened the flames, while fire alarms were found to be faulty, officials said. Chief Secretary Eric Chan confirmed contractors hid substandard materials from inspectors in hard-to-reach areas.

Thousands of mourners paid tribute to victims, including at least nine Indonesian and one Filipino domestic helper. Vigils are planned this week in Tokyo, London, and Taipei. Amid public anger over ignored fire warnings, Beijing has warned against anti-China protests.

At least one person involved in a petition calling for an independent probe as death toll rose was briefly detained. Hong Kong Security Chief Chris Tang said, โ€œSome people with malicious intent are trying to exploit this tragedy to harm Hong Kong and national security.โ€

Search operations continue in the worst-affected buildings and may take weeks. Officers in hazmat suits are inspecting blackened apartments and wading through water used to douse the fire. More than 4,000 residents lived in the estate, with over 1,100 relocated to temporary housing. Emergency funds and assistance with identity documents have been provided.

Residents had previously raised fire risk concerns, but authorities deemed them low-risk. Hong Kongโ€™s deadliest fire since 1948 has shocked the city as legislative elections approach. Authorities have warned that anyone attempting to disrupt Hong Kong during this crisis will face strict accountability.

The probe as death toll climbs continues to uncover failures in construction oversight, with investigations ongoing into contractors, renovation practices, and public safety violations.
