How China’s BYD Overtook Tesla in Global EV Sales

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker BYD is on track to surpass Tesla as the world’s top EV seller in 2025. This marks a major shift in global EV sales, long dominated by the U.S. automaker.

As of November 2025, BYD reported sales of 2.07 million EVs worldwide. In comparison, Tesla sold around 1.22 million EVs by September, with projections estimating its full-year total at 1.65 million. Analysts say Tesla’s EV sales may fall significantly short of BYD’s figure.

Experts attribute Tesla’s slowdown to the expiration of the $7,500 U.S. EV tax credit, which had temporarily boosted demand. In addition, competition from European automakers and changing consumer preferences in North America and Europe affected the company’s growth.

BYD’s rise was also challenged by intense domestic price competition in China and international trade barriers, including U.S. tariffs and European duties on Chinese EV imports. The company responded by expanding overseas production and exporting vehicles, including setting up a new facility in Hungary.

Industry observers note that BYD’s global strategy, timely production expansion, and aggressive international approach helped it capture more market share. The company’s success highlights the evolving dynamics of EV sales and the growing importance of global supply chains.

Tesla is not standing still. The automaker plans to launch advanced “full self-driving” features and begin production of autonomous Cybercab robotaxis in April 2026. It also aims to introduce more affordable versions of Model 3 and Model Y, which may help boost future sales.
