The UAE Public Prosecution has cautioned citizens not to use harsh language or make defamatory remarks online. Offenders may face harsh penalties, including imprisonment and fines of up to $136,000 (AED 500,000).
These rules apply to all types of electronic communication, including social media and messaging apps.
The Public Prosecution has stated that people who use vulgar language towards on-duty public sector employees on the internet will face serious penalties. The penalty is imprisonment or a fine of AED 250,000 to AED 500,000.
Article 43 of Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2021 on combatting electronic crimes and rumours applies to the offence.
The authority has also started a new campaign dubbed “Waey,” which aims to increase public understanding of the country’s criminal laws.
Waey will launch a number of measures to encourage healthy behaviour and foster an inclusive atmosphere, including media education, legal guidance, and community participation.
It will also monitor any unfavourable social behaviour that may endanger Emirati society’s ideals and initiate awareness-raising activities to reduce its harmful influence.
Furthermore, Waey will use media channels and technology to ensure that its message is received by all societal groups, particularly youth.
