India Pushes Ahead with 100+ Rafale Jets After May 2025 Setback Against Pakistan

India Pushes Ahead with 100+ Rafale Jets After May 2025 Setback Against Pakistan

India has approved a major plan to purchase and co-produce 114 Rafale fighter jets in a multi-billion-dollar deal with France. The move comes as India faces challenges with its aging air fleet and rising tensions with Pakistan.

The Defense Procurement Board cleared the proposal on Friday. Officials said most of the 114 Rafale jets will be built in India in partnership with French manufacturer Dassault Aviation. This is expected to boost India’s domestic defense production and air capabilities.

The announcement follows India’s May 2025 aerial clash with Pakistan, during which several Rafale jets were lost. Experts note that the engagement highlighted weaknesses in India’s current air defense system. However, defense officials emphasize that acquiring additional Rafale jets will modernize and strengthen the fleet.

India’s older aircraft, including MiG-29 and Su-30 fighters, are nearing the end of their operational life. By adding Rafale jets, the Indian Air Force aims to maintain air superiority and improve rapid response capacity.

The new deal also signals growing defense cooperation between India and France. French President Emmanuel Macron is reportedly planning a visit to India next month, which could coincide with further defense discussions.

Analysts say the Rafale acquisition will support India’s long-term strategic goals while also boosting the local aerospace sector. Nearly all jets will be produced in India under a co-production agreement, creating jobs and technology transfer opportunities.

Despite past setbacks, India remains committed to expanding its Rafale fleet. Officials stress that this step is crucial to secure the country’s airspace and maintain regional stability amid ongoing tensions with Pakistan.

The Rafale jets, equipped with advanced avionics, weapons systems, and electronic warfare capabilities, are expected to enhance India’s overall air combat readiness.
