India tightens pollution measures as Delhi and surrounding areas face severe smog. The Commission for Air Quality Management invoked stage four of the Graded Response Action Plan on Saturday evening, the highest alert level, according to the environment ministry.
On Sunday, air quality readings in Delhi reached โsevereโ levels, with the official index exceeding 450 at multiple monitoring stations. This marks an increase from 430 on Saturday and the highest level recorded this winter season. For context, readings below 50 are considered โgood.โ
As India tightens pollution controls, authorities have imposed several restrictions. The entry of older diesel trucks has been banned, construction activitiesโincluding public projectsโhave been suspended, and schools have adopted hybrid learning methods to reduce outdoor exposure.
Delhi, home to roughly 30 million residents, often experiences smog during winter. Cold, dense air traps emissions from vehicles, construction, and crop burning in neighboring states, pushing pollution levels to some of the highest in the world. These conditions increase respiratory and cardiac risks for the population.
Officials have urged residents to stay indoors whenever possible. Children, elderly citizens, and people with pre-existing respiratory or cardiac conditions were specifically advised to remain inside. Masks are recommended for anyone needing to go outdoors.
The Commission for Air Quality Management noted that the spike in pollution is driven by high moisture levels and shifting wind directions, which hinder the dispersion of pollutants and worsen smog formation.
Environmental experts warn that as India tightens pollution measures, citizens must also take precautions to reduce exposure. Short-term strategies, such as avoiding outdoor exercise and using air purifiers indoors, are being recommended alongside government restrictions.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. If conditions worsen, additional curbs may be imposed to ensure public safety and limit the impact of severe air pollution across Delhi and neighboring regions.
The latest measures demonstrate Indiaโs proactive approach to tackling one of the worldโs most persistent urban pollution crises, balancing public health with the realities of industrial and urban activity.
